Do Roofers Still Need Door Knockers? How to Reach Every Home Without Knocking

For many roofers, no. A door-knocking crew only reaches the homes where someone answers, where knocking is allowed, and where a rep shows up that day. With ACE, a roofer can reach every home in a storm zone by mail, text and email, and the homeowner raises their hand by watching the roofer's short video and claiming a real reward.

Quick answer

A canvassing crew only reaches the doors that open. Here's the case on cost, reach and rules for reaching every home without knocking, and how to make the switch.

The short answer

At ACE, we replace the knock with an offer. We build a list of homeowners in your area, send each home a mailer, text or email with a unique code, and reward them with a real gift card for watching a short video about your company. The people who watch are the ones who want to talk, so your team spends its time calling warm homeowners instead of walking streets. Our roofing campaigns typically see about 9% of recipients activate the offer.

What a door knocker is really doing

Door knocking works because it does three jobs at once:

  1. It finds the house. A rep walks the streets that took damage.
  2. It gets attention. A few minutes face to face, so the homeowner knows who you are.
  3. It asks for the next step. "Can we take a look at your roof?"

None of those jobs requires a person on the porch. Data can find the house. A short video can earn the attention. A reward and a fast phone call can ask for the next step. Once you see it that way, the question isn't "knockers or no knockers." It's "what's the cheapest, widest way to do those three jobs?"

The reach problem

A canvassing crew can only reach part of a neighborhood, no matter how hard they work.

  • Nobody's home. Many homeowners are at work during the day. A door hanger isn't a conversation.
  • They won't open the door. Plenty of people never answer for a stranger, especially after a storm brings a wave of them.
  • You can't go there. No-soliciting neighborhoods and gated communities are off limits to knockers, and they're often some of the best neighborhoods in town.
  • You run out of feet. A rep can only walk so many doors in a day. A big storm zone takes weeks to cover.

Mail, text and email don't have those limits. Every address in the zone gets the offer on the same day, including the ones behind the gate.

The cost problem

A canvassing team costs more than its pay. Think about what you actually spend:

  • Recruiting and training. Door-to-door work has high turnover, so you're always hiring.
  • Pay and commissions. Whether a rep books ten inspections or none, you're paying for the time or the travel.
  • Managing the crew. Someone has to schedule, coach and check on them.
  • Your reputation. One pushy rep can sour a whole street on your name.

Here's a simple way to compare. Take everything you spend on canvassing in a month and divide it by the inspections the crew booked. That's your cost per inspection from knocking. With ACE, you pay for rewards only when a homeowner completes the action, so you pay only when the action happens. If nobody acts, you pay no rewards. Put the two numbers side by side for your own business.

The rules problem

Door knocking comes with rules that change from town to town.

  • Local permits and hours. Many cities require a permit for door-to-door sales or limit when you can knock.
  • HOA bans. Many HOAs ban door-to-door sales, door hangers and yard signs.
  • "No Soliciting" signs. Some cities enforce them by ordinance.

Mail doesn't need a permit to reach a mailbox. Text, email and calls have their own rules, like the TCPA, the Do Not Call list and CAN-SPAM. We scrub every list against Do Not Call, send from your own accounts only after you approve the contacts and messages, and review the plan with every business. Check the rules for your area with your own attorney.

How to reach every home without knocking

Here's how a roofer replaces the canvassing crew, step by step. See how it works for the full system.

  1. Map the zone. Outline the neighborhoods you want, street by street, including the gated and no-soliciting ones.
  2. Build the list. ACE Data finds homeowners there who are actively researching roof repair or roofers. We score them high, medium or low and drop the low ones, then clean the list: Do Not Call scrubbing, phone and email verification.
  3. Record your video. A short video from our script: who you are, how long you've been local, and what an inspection involves. Your phone and a few minutes are enough. This is your "door knock."
  4. Send the offer everywhere. Each home gets a mailer with a unique code tied to that address, plus text and email to the cleaned list. We can use every channel we use, from ringless voicemail to ads for roofers that qualify.
  5. Let homeowners raise their hand. A typical roofing ladder: the homeowner watches the video and a real gift card unlocks, for example $20 from Amazon. A second reward can unlock when they book an inspection, for example another $30. The booking step isn't used in Florida (see below).
  6. Call fast. Your team calls within minutes. The homeowner has already seen your face and heard your story, so the call starts warm.

The video can't be skipped, sound has to be on, and the reward unlocks at 75% watched. Phone verification stops anyone from claiming twice.

In Florida, state law (Fla. Stat. 489.147) bars roofing contractors from offering a gift card, cash or anything of value in exchange for allowing a roof inspection or making an insurance claim. So in Florida, we structure ACE campaigns so the reward is only for watching the roofer's video. It never depends on booking, allowing or completing an inspection, or on filing a claim, and we never call it an inspection incentive. This is how we set up Florida campaigns, not legal advice. We review every campaign, and you should confirm with your own attorney. Everywhere, rewards are never tied to an insurance claim and never touch a deductible.

If you keep your knockers

Some roofers win on the porch, and that's fine. Good reps are good at what they do. You can make them more effective instead of replacing them:

  • Leave a card, not a hanger. When nobody answers, the rep leaves a physical ACE card with a unique code. The homeowner can watch your video that night, and the conversation keeps going.
  • Split the map. Reps work the open streets. Mail, text and email cover the gated and no-soliciting homes they can't reach.
  • Send reps to warm doors. Homeowners who watched the video are the ones worth a visit.

After a big storm, this mix lets you cover the whole zone fast. We cover that moment in detail in our guide to booking inspections after a hailstorm.

What we've seen

  • About 9% activation. In a typical ACE roofing campaign, about 9 in 100 homeowners who get the offer activate it. Across our direct mail and digital campaigns, engagement has ranged from about 5% to 28%.
  • Strong where knockers can't go. No-soliciting neighborhoods and gated communities have been some of our best-performing areas.
  • Works alongside knocking. Roofers who keep their crews have seen strong results using ACE cards and mail together with their reps.
  • Fast response. In one direct mail campaign, a homeowner booked a roof inspection 20 minutes after getting the offer.

These are results from past campaigns, not a promise for yours. Your market, offer and follow-up speed all change the numbers.

When this isn't the right fit

  • Nobody can call leads back quickly. Without a crew, your phone is the front line. If leads wait two days, the reward is wasted.
  • You won't be on camera. The video replaces the rep's first impression. We write the script, but someone from your company needs to record it.
  • You need homeowners this week. A campaign usually takes 2 to 3 weeks to launch. Set it up before storm season so it's ready.
  • Your crew is already your best channel. If your reps book at a low cost and your area allows knocking, keep them and add ACE where they can't reach.
  • You're outside the U.S. ACE only works with U.S. businesses.

Frequently asked questions

Do roofers still need door knockers in 2026?

Many don't. Mail, text and email can reach every home in a storm zone, including gated and no-soliciting neighborhoods, and a reward for watching your video lets interested homeowners raise their hand. Roofers who like their crews can keep them and use ACE where knockers can't go.

What's the best alternative to door knocking for roofers?

Direct mail with a unique code, plus text and email to a cleaned list, works well because it reaches every address. Pair it with a short video and a real reward so homeowners have a reason to respond, then call them fast.

Is door knocking for roofing still worth it?

It can be, if your reps book at a low cost and your area allows it. Divide your monthly canvassing cost by the inspections booked and compare that to a campaign where you pay rewards only when a homeowner acts.

How do I get roofing leads without canvassing?

Start with a list of homeowners in your area who are researching roof repair, clean it against Do Not Call, and send each home an offer by mail, text and email. The homeowners who watch your video and claim the reward are your leads.

Can my door knockers use ACE too?

Yes. When nobody answers, reps leave an ACE card with a unique code. The homeowner can watch your video later and claim the reward, so the visit isn't wasted.

Does this work for roofers in Florida?

Yes, with a different setup. In Florida, the reward is only for watching the roofer's video and never depends on an inspection or an insurance claim. Confirm with your own attorney.
